England 4/1 FAVOURITES for Euro 2020

977

UEFA Euro 2020 is just around the corner and international football fans will now be starting to cast one eye on the progress and preparation of their favourite team in the lead up to the tournament.

This year’s European Championships will be slightly different in that the games will be taking place all over Europe, ranging from Scotland to Azerbaijan, with the semi-finals and final eventually taking place at Wembley Stadium in London.

That, of course, is the home of English football and Gareth Southgate’s England would love nothing more than to have the opportunity to win the tournament on their home soil. According to the bookmakers, this is an extremely realistic possibility for the Three Lions.

At this moment in time, England are priced as the 4/1 favourites to go all the way and win Euro 2020 this summer, despite captain Harry Kane’s current injury problems that could put his participation in doubt.

That is also in spite of the fact that current world champions France will of course also be at the Euro 2020 Finals and many would argue that they are currently the best international team in the world.

Other quality outfits such as Belgium, Germany, Spain and Holland will also be present at the finals and it is some compliment to Southgate’s side to have them ranked as the favourites to go all the way.

Whether or not that happens is an entirely different proposition altogether, with England still yet to go any further than the semi-finals of any European Championships. Their group may well have played a part in their favourable odds, as they are matched up against Croatia – who they twice defeated in the Nations League – the Czech Republic and one of Scotland, Israel, Serbia or Norway.

Home advantage may well also be a telling factor, with England having the favourable draw of playing at Wembley in both the semi-finals and the final of the competition, should they make it that far.

Emerging talents such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jadon Sancho, Joe Gomez and Ben Chilwell are also expected to be added to a side that made the World Cup semi-finals with the likes of Ashley Young and Jesse Lingard in the starting XI.

England have been in this position many times before and have scarcely been able to produce when the expectation levels have exceeded anything more than a quarter-final appearance. But with a squad full of talent, could this finally be the Three Lions’ time at the European Championships?
