Proud Stoke City go out of Quarter Finals to Spurs

Stoke 1 Spurs 3 – 23/12/20 5.30

Stoke fall at the Quarter Final stage of the Carabao Cup to a strong Spurs side. The match came to life when Thompson equalised, but Stoke’s defence later crumpled. But they should be proud of their 2nd half performance. First half, less so.Here’s what Michael O’Neill an Jose Mourinho had to say after the match:
Here’s how the game unfolded in real time:
Carabao Cup Quarter Final! I hope the pigsty dressing rooms are up to scratch! Stoke haven’t conceded in this competition yet, and now they face the side who used to regularly put 4-6 goals past Stoke, before relegation put a stop to that sort of debacle. 6 changes for City, particularly finding a keeper who can play tonight (Andy Lonergan gets the nod today, despite not having played a game since…since…). Spurs play in a rather fetching racing green strip, although Bale looks pretty stupid with his man-bun. Kane starts, but thankfully not Son.
3.01 Lonergan punches out Jacob Brown. He’s definitely going to be entertaining tonight!
13.17 Lonergan makes a point-blank save from Harry Kane. It looks like it’s exhausted him already.
16.45 Jose Mourinho caught on camera trying to make his shiny trousers look cool. It’s not happening.
21.35 0-1 ! Bale flick header into the far corner, and I was mocking his man-bun. Hm. Harry Winks assists with a cross – Stoke caught napping (cue forty-Winks joke).
31.30 As Fox goes off, McClean drops back to cover. But somehow MON decides NOT to put on Tymon (who’s warming up), and changes his mind to put on Fletcher.
34.37 Kane puts Dele Alli in, but Lonergan’s leg saves the day.
39.12 Brown and Tash comically bash into each other. Ref has to stifle laughter as he stops the game.
42.30 Lonergan makes a finger-tipped save to his left from Alli. Earning his corn.
45+1 HT Stoke 0 Spurs 1 – the away dressing room must be too plush.
45.00 Bale off…Son on. Great.
47.50 Dele Alli misses clear cut chance from a lob by Kane.
48.30 Danny Batth narrowly avoids giving penalty away.
52.48 1-1 ! Jordan Thompson slots in at the far post from an inch-perfect cross from the right by Jacob Brown. Class goal. First chance, first shot, first goal. The Boothen End goes mad, mainly because they’re not actually allowed in the ground.
69.59 1-2 ! Ben Davies hits a long-shot from the left side and it goes in off the far post.
70.40 Nick Powell on for Jacob Brown. Brown sits in the stand and looks heartbroken. His assist for the Stoke goal was glorious though.
75.30 Kane robs dozy Souttar, but although Son scores it’s ruled (unfairly) offside. Batth surely plays him onside.
78.20 Sam Vokes on for Oakley Boothe.
80.44 1-3 ! Harry Kane scores after dozy Stoke defence (Collins but mainly Thompson) give the ball away.
85.40 Fletcher’s free header goes horribly wide, but replay shows an arm-tug by Kane.
90+3 Vokes has a shot shock!
FT Stoke 1 Spurs 3 – Spurs clearly not going the way of Villa or Wolves.
