Coronavirus: Leek club day cancelled

Organisers of the Leek Town Club Day, otherwise known as Walking Round Day, have announced that this years event will be cancelled due to the Covid-19 epidemic.

Dating back over two centuries, the Staffordshire Moorlands market town has hosted an annual open air service and procession through the town centre – with more than two thousand people taking part each year. The annual event which involves churches, schools, bands and clubs from the market town, was due to be led by the Gateway Church but the event will joining hundreds of events across the country which will be cancelled due to the current epidemic.

A Spokesperson for Leek Club Day said “Since the emergence of the Covid-19 outbreak in January, we have continued to follow the guidance of the Government, Public Health England and NHS England, seeking to understand the implications for Leek Club Day. Whilst we continue to prey and hope for the improvement of the current situation, the significant preparations required to facilitate Leek Club Day and the likelihood that the Social Distancing Measures will continue for some time, we now feel it is the right time to cancel this years event.

“In light of this decision, Leek Club Day will next take place on Saturday 10th July 2021, led by Gateway. The organisers would like to thank everyone for there continued contribution, hard work and commitment to Leek Club Day and we look forward to next years event”
