Programme of Improvements for Staffordshire Schools Approved

A plan for maintenance and repairs at Staffordshire schools over the next year has been approved.

The Capital Programme for Schools 2026/27 will see upgraded facilities for schools, including refurbished playgrounds, updated toilet blocks and repaired roofs.

The programme will also include upgrades to make schools more sustainable, replacing inefficient heating systems with more environmentally friendly options and improving insulation.

Over 60 mainstream and special schools will benefit from the programme, helping to ensure that buildings remain safe, warm and dry.

These improvements also complement the council’s wider ambitions set out in the Community Safety Strategy, which focuses on creating safer, stronger places and protecting vulnerable people. By modernising facilities and improving the overall condition of buildings, the programme supports both educational outcomes and the long‑term wellbeing of the communities they serve.

Janet Higgins, Cabinet Member for Education and SEND at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“It is widely recognised that a school building is more than just a building.  It is the foundation that supports teaching and learning and helps shape the future of our next generation.

“A good environment can promote better attendance, concentration and help motivate both staff and pupils alike. That is why we are committed to keeping schools safe, warm and dry, with facilities that support pupils’ wellbeing. This includes redesigning toilet areas to help reduce bullying and ensure safer spaces for every child.

“This year’s capital programme sets out our plans to support our education goals.”

The Capital Programme for Schools was approved at a meeting of the council’s Cabinet on Wednesday 15 April.
