All systems go as Space launches another summer of fun in Stoke-on-Trent

A fun-filled event at Queens Park, Longton signalled the official launch of a summer of activity for Space 2022.

Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire & Rescue and Crime, Ben Adams dropped into the launch event, which was organised by the YMCA, to see young people trying their hand at multi-sports as well as enjoying a climbing wall, a bouncy castle and a DJ.

The summer programme, which runs from 25 July to 26 August, brings together public, voluntary and private sector organisations to provide support for potentially vulnerable young people to help increase skills, improve health and wellbeing and create opportunities with an additional aim of reducing levels of anti-social behaviour.

Hundreds of activities will be taking place across the City over the next six weeks including raft building, swimming, gym sessions, survival skill training, wildlife experiences and kayaking. Places are still available but booking up fast.

Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire & Rescue and Crime, Ben Adams said: “The excitement and joy of the young people at today’s activity in Longton was fantastic to see. The Space scheme clearly makes a difference, providing memorable experiences for many while diverting some away from potential involvement in low-level crime and anti-social behaviour.

“These activities are all about providing an opportunity for Staffordshire Police and partners to engage with young people who may be going through a difficult time to help nurture, support and develop them and this is why I have committed to Space running for a further three years.”

YMCA Facilities Manager, Peter Flynn said: The Space programme is a fantastic opportunity for young people to get together and the community to build something special. Without the support of the Staffordshire Commissioner’s Office, Staffordshire Police, Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service and the many other partners involved, Space simply wouldn’t happen. It’s great to see the programme playing such an important role within Stoke-on-Trent.”

Details of activities including how to book are available on the Space website so check out what is going on in your area: www.staffordshirespace.uk
