Cheadle lady reunited with lost money thanks to help of officers and local community

Moorlands Police have thanked the public that came forward with intelligence that helped with their enquiries. This resulted in a positive outcome relating to a ‘theft by finding’ incident in May in Cheadle.

A blind lady dropped an envelope containing £500 cash that she had just withdrawn from the post office.

Police were able to obtain CCTV of the incident which showed a Gentleman Pass down the street and pick up the envelope containing the cash.

An appeal for information was launched using images from the CCTV with a request that the public help to identify the Gentleman.

The public provided information enabled them to identify the man from the CCTV, after visiting the man’s home the cash was retrieved, with the man explaining that he had picked up the envelope, which he had then kept for safe keeping.

PCSO Waters and PC Johnson have now returned the cash to its rightful owner, who is delighted.

The Cheadle community had rallied around the lady and helped her in her time of difficulty by raising the missing funds.

The owner of the cash has pledged to make a £500 donation to Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Chief Inspector Mark Barlow, Commander for Staffordshire Moorlands local policing team, said: “We’re delighted to have been able to help a vulnerable member of our community. Adrian did some great work tracking down the money after watching CCTV and utilising social media to ask for the communities help.

“This is an excellent example of our officers and our communities working together and I want to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their efforts in helping us identify the man so we were able to reunite the lady with her money.”
