Staffordshire will mark Holocaust Memorial Day on Thursday 27 January with a series of events and activities.
The day remembers those who lost their lives during the Nazi persecution and genocides throughout history.
The theme for this year’s commemoration is ‘One Day’, in the hope that one day we may live in a world without genocide. Amongst the activities are special remembrance and reconciliation services, the planting of memorial trees, lighting of candles and book discussions. A series of podcasts and short films will also be played throughout the day to help people understand more about the horrors which took place during the Holocaust over 75 years ago.
At the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, people are invited to attend a traditional service and candle lighting at 11am in the Millennium Chapel.
Alan White, Leader of Staffordshire County Council said: “This is an important day when we come together to remember those lives affected by persecution and genocide.
“By standing together at ceremonies, lighting a candle or by planting a memorial tree, we can show our support and respect to all those affected by such terrible crimes. The day also gives us an opportunity for people to recognise that racism and other forms of discrimination are not to be tolerated and that ‘One Day’ we will hopefully put an end to genocide and other hate crimes.
“I would urge people to try and take some time on Thursday to show their respect and remember the lives of those lost during these cruel times.”
