Fire at Garage Deemed Accidental

A fire at a garage in Longton was started accidentally, fire fighters have confirmed.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at 4.32pm on Tuesday 1 June to Motor Clinic on Trentham Road in Longton.

Crews from Hanley, Newcastle, Sandyford and two from Longton attended, along with an aerial ladder platform.

No casualties were reported.

Police officers attended to assist with traffic management which saw Trentham Road closed and a diversion put in place.

All persons in the nearby vicinity were evacuated.

Fire crews liaised with the Environment Agency and a dedicated hazardous materials advisor also attended the scene.

The premises contained 150 tyres, multi-car components and petrol. Heating oil and a diesel fuel tank were protected from the threat of fire.

Approximately eight cars were damaged as a result of radiating heat along with a large container which comprised of a quantity of petrol, tyres, vehicle engines and alloy wheels.

There was also damage sustained to a tyre-removal machine.

Fire fighters used three main jets, two hose reels, one foam jet and six breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire which was put out by 8pm.

A re-inspection of the premises took place at midnight and the fire was deemed an accidental ignition.
