A fire at a property in Burslem has been deemed accidental by fire fighters.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at 3.26pm on Sunday (5 December) to High Lane.
Crews from Newcastle, Rising Brook, Ipstones and Longton attended.
Upon arrival, fire fighters found a building well-alight and the occupants, including a dog, safely outside the address.
Fire fighters used four breathing apparatus and two hose-reel-jets to extinguish the fire.
One woman and a man, both in their 80s, were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
The man was conveyed to hospital for further checks and later discharged.
The pair were placed in emergency accommodation.
The dog was housed with a neighbour.
Crews left the scene following a revisit at 9.52pm.
Following an investigation, fire crews determined that the fire started accidentally as a result of a leaking gas cannister being used for cooking.
In order to keep safe in the home while preparing food, fire fighters advise:
- Look when you cook and never leave cooking unattended
- Take any pans off the heat when you leave the room
- Keep cloths away from the hob
- Keep electrical cables away from water
- Do not use matches or lighters to light gas ovens, use safer spark devices instead
- Take care when wearing loose clothing around the hob
