In Conversation With…… Mike D’Abo

In my role as the Moorlands Radio Arts & Entertainment Correspondent I get to talk to many interesting folk from the industry. It isn’t often I get to talk to a true legend but I did today.

Mike D’Abo was born in 1944 and is best known as the lead vocalist of Manfred Man from 1966 until they eventually split in 1969. He also penned the classic 60’s hit Handbags and Gladrags which was a huge hit for Chris Farlowe. The song was also covered by Love Affair, Rod Stewart and The Stereophonics.

D’Abo also wrote Build Me Up Buttercup a number 2 hit on the UK Singles Chart for The Foundations.

He went on to collaborate with different artists He also had his own radio show. Mike has reunited with other original bandmates to tour with the Manfreds occasionally.

I had the pleasure to talk to Mike D’Abo today and I started by saying it was a privilege to talk to a true 60’s legend – he responded by saying he was a survivor of the 60’s. Have a listen below:

Mike D’Abo is currently on tour along with the Sensational 60’s Experience which will perform at the Buxton Opera House on the 24th November 2024
