Kidsgrove up to 13th in the league table after victory at Market Drayton Town

Just 80 hardy souls witnessed Kidsgrove Athletic move up to 13th in the BetVictor Northern Premier S/East Division as they won 2-0 away at Market Drayton Town.

First-half goals from Kyle Diskin and Anthony Malbon was enough to give the Grove victory in Shropshire.

Kieran Harrison had to be alert after just 14 minutes of play when he had to push winger Louis Henman-Mason’s shot onto the post. It looked like the ball was going into the back of the net. However, it hit the woodwork and bounced away.

Joe Thomas and Harvey Howell both had efforts for the Gingerbread men. However, they were straight at Harrison.

At the other end, Malbon had the first effort for Kidsgrove as he headed the ball straight into Ash Rawlins hands after some neat build up play by the Grove.

Rhys Thompson also had an effort which went wide of the goal. While James Jennings put a header just inches wide of the post as Kidsgrove looked to get on the front foot.

Diskin has had a busy week as he has just become a dad and this was his first game since the Carlton match on Bank Holiday Monday and, he marked in some style on 37 minutes when he smashed a peach of a volley into the goal with it dipping over Rawlins to open the scoring. It’s surely an early contender for goal of the season.

The Grove doubled their lead just three minutes before the interval when Alex Morris won a corner. It was swung in by Diskin and, Malbon stooped to head it home to make it 2-0 to the Grove to give them some breathing space.

There were to be no more goals in the second half, but it wasn’t for lack of trying as Diskin put a free-kick over the bar. While Malbon headed wide at the back post from a corner.

Tyler Savage was brought on for his debut with 20 minutes to go when he replaced James Jennings. While Shaun Rhodes replaced Kyle Diskin as Austin looked to tighten up the defence to ensure all three points returned to Staffordshire.

Those three points did return to Staffordshire and, the Grove as the Grove move up to 13th in the BetVictor Northern Premier S/East Division league table.

After the game, I spoke to Ryan Austin to get his thoughts on the tie.
