Leek Town FC bring in former Stoke City youngster Liam Edwards

Leek Town have announced the arrival of new signing Liam Edwards.

The defender joins the Northern Premier League West champions from National League North side Chester, whom he played 25 times for last season as they finished 10th in the league table, just six points off the playoff places.

Edwards is a local lad having spent his academy days with Stoke City before signing a professional contract with the Potters in 2015 but, he was released just two years later without playing in the Stoke City first team.

Following his departure from the bet365 stadium, he headed north for Bolton Wanderers where he became captain of their under 23s side, skippering them to the 2017-18 Professional League Development title.

His performances for the Wanderers under 23s team were enough to see him make his professional debut for Bolton as he played the full 90 minutes in their 2-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers.

The defender continued to play for the first team until he picked up an injury that ruled him out of action for 22 months. Upon his return to action, he joined National League North side Southport in November 2021 for a one month loan, which was eventually extended to until the end of the season.

Edwards was then released by Bolton in May 2022 and, upon his departure from the Trotters, he joined Chester FC making just over 50 appearances for the club.

He becomes Leek’s third new signing of the summer following the arrival of Tyreece Oyneka and Alex Hurst, the club have also said that more updates will be following in the next week or so.
