Lewis Bergin and Spencer Gunnell return to Kidsgrove Athletic

Kidsgrove Athletic have signed two more players ahead of the 2020/21 Northern Premier League season.

Returning to the club are defenders Lewis Bergin and Spencer Gunnell.

Bergin originally joined the Athletic on loan from Port Vale in 2015 before returning to the Grove a year later from local rivals Newcastle Town. He spent three years at the Autonet Insurance Stadium before joining Congleton Town of the North West Counties Football League last November.

Kidsgrove manager Scott Dundas is delighted to bring back Bergin following the departures of three centrebacks over the summer.

He said: “With James Butler, Richard Duffy and Oliver Jepson leaving, it (centre back) is a place that we needed to strengthen.

“I had Bergin when I was at Newcastle Town so I know all about his wand of a left foot and, I am pleased that he has come back and signed for us.

“He will be a great signing to play at centre back and at full back.”

Meanwhile, Gunnell featured for Kidsgrove in the El Staffico derby against Leek Town back in January this year as he filled in due to injuries and suspensions picked up by the Grove.

Formerly of Chasetown and Newcastle Town, he is another player to have previously played under Dundas.

Dundas said: “I put him as my captain at Chasetown as he had a tremendous pre-season and we had five or six games where he was head and shoulders above anything we had there.

“Unfortunately, he ruptured his Achilles and, we all know how long that takes to get over. I think he did it in 2017, so it has been a while for him.

“He played against Leek Town last season which was pleasing for him to get back in the fold. I’m pleased that he has come back on board with us. He is a six foot, big, strong, quick centre half, so I’m really happy with that.”

Bergin and Gunnell join Kyle Diskin, Ricky Bridge, Callum Lovatt, Jake Lovatt and Will Byers in signing for Kidsgrove this summer.
