A day organised by partners in “Grime” Alan Fletcher and Sammi Pickering was given the Valentines Day vibe when a huge number of Leek residents showed the love for their home town of Leek.

The ‘Love Where You Live Leek’ supporters went out in huge numbers to litter pick their streets and ended up filling 73 bin bags of rubbish collected on the day. An incredible 323 streets out of a possible 435 were covered.

Some extraordinary items were found during the clean up like an item of underwear found frozen on a pavement, a rotting shoe and a carrot and parsnip (someone’s Lobby going without 2 key ingredients).

The original idea was Alan Fletcher’s following a comment made on Facebook about the council being responsible for keeping the streets litter free. Alan thought the public were responsible for the problem in the first place and he wanted residents to be as proud of his home town as he is.

Sammi Pickering agreed with his comments and between them they started a Facebook group which now has over 400 likes and follows.

The day after the litter pick and with time to reflect on the success of the day Sammi spoke to Moorlands Radio News & Sports Editor Tony Walley.
