Man, Who Tried to Bite Police Officer is Jailed

A 40-year-old man’s been jailed after trying to bite a police officer as he was being interviewed in connection with a coffee shop burglary in Hanley.

James Corcoran, of no fixed address, was sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment after being found guilty of assaulting an emergency worker and burglary following an incident in the early hours of Saturday 27 February 2021.

The burglary, which took place at Caffe Nero on Parliament Row, saw the front door damaged before a tablet, iPad, panic alarm, scales and a slice of cheesecake was stolen.

Corcoran was later arrested and questioned by officers. When being interviewed, Corcoran tried to bite the interviewing officers.

PC Daniel Wilson from Staffordshire Police said: “This burglary saw a number of items taken, including a £600 iPad, and we’re pleased with the sentencing handed to Corcoran.

“We hope this sentencing acts as a deterrent for any opportunistic burglars looking to target our town’s retailers.”
