Several schools across the Staffordshire Moorlands closed their doors on Thursday due to snow, ice and freezing temperatures.
More snow fell in the Moorlands overnight on Wednesday and into Thursday morning, leading to difficult conditions on many school sites.
More than 30 schools in North Staffordshire took the decision to close and informed their parents via text, email, and school websites. Staff on school sites worked to re-open most Schools for Friday morning.
Gritters and snow ploughs were out across the area from Tuesday afternoon onwards to try and keep roads clear.
David Williams, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Staffordshire County Council said: “We have a fleet of more than 40 gritters and have around 20,000 tonnes of salt stockpiled so we have been well prepared for the sub-zero temperatures. On routine winter days and nights gritters will be focusing on the major routes and extending to the wider network in prolonged ice and snow conditions.”
