Flavours of Mexico Coming to Leek’s Award-Winning Markets

Mexican eatery Chimichecas is the latest food business to join Leek’s award-winning Trestle Market.

The project is led by co-founders Angel, a chef originally from Puebla, and Joseph, a Leek local with a family history of running local businesses.

Angel’s hometown of Puebla is regarded as one of the historic centres of Mexican cuisine, known for iconic dishes that form an integral part of Mexico’s gastronomy – recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

With more than a decade of professional kitchen experience and training in Mexico and the USA, Angel now aims to bring the traditional flavours of his homeland to the town that has welcomed him so warmly since he moved to the UK in 2024.

The Leek-based business will open soon joining Scrumbles Cake Shop and The Slamwich Club in the Trestle Market completing the line-up of food businesses operating from the new food units installed as part of the recent transformation of the town’s indoor markets.

Councillor Matt Swindlehurst, Cabinet member for Leisure and Tourism, said: “This is yet more fantastic news for our award-winning markets. The new food units have been a great success and a big draw for foodies from the Moorlands and further afield. Adding Chimichecas to the mix will only make the markets more popular and we’re delighted to welcome them.

“The investment we’ve made in rejuvenating the markets has been worth every penny. Leek has always been a market town and this re-invention of the Butter and Trestle markets for the modern day continues that legacy and ensures the markets will remain a defining feature of the town for generations to come.”

The markets won the ‘Best Small Indoor Markets’ award at the national Great British Market Awards 2026 organised by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA). The awards, voted for by peers, celebrate excellence, innovation and commitment across the UK markets sector.

Alongside the shops and businesses, the market also plays host to a variety of cultural and community events throughout the year, including the very popular Mexican Day of the Dead.

Angel and Joseph said: “We’re immensely excited to be bringing a piece of Mexico to the Staffordshire Moorlands. Centuries of culinary tradition meets centuries of market tradition, and we can’t wait to share the true flavours of Mexico with the area.”
