Abbey Hulton United manager Michael Wright speaks to Moorlands Radio following Edward Case Cup defeat to Winsford United

Abbey Hulton United manager Michael Wright lost his first home game as manager of the club as they were beaten 5-1 by Winsford United in the Edward Case Cup.

Wright was appointed as boss on Friday following Russ Leadbetter’s decision to step away from the role earlier this season. His first game in charge was bizarrely away at last night’s opponents in the league where they lost 4-1.

The hosts lost Shaun Cave to a red card on 10 minutes when he brought down Ross Aikenhead on the edge of the area and, it meant the Abbey would have an uphill battle if they were to progress to the next round.

The visitors went 2-0 up thanks to a brace from Ezekiel Eme before the half an hour mark and, you felt that they would run away with the game with their extra man on the pitch.

However, credit to Abbey Hulton who kept plugging away at the Winsford defence where they could and, substitute Daniel Allen got a goal back just before the halftime break when he looped a header over Jerry Legrand-Akpo to give Wright’s men hope of turning the tie around.

Despite a strong second-half showing from Abbey Hulton, three goals in the final 15 minutes, two from Aikenhead and one from Ashley Leather, saw the side from the Drayton Beaumont stadium bow out of the competition at the first round stage.

Following his home debut as manager, Wright spoke to Moorlands Radio Sport about the game.

We will have more with Michael in this week’s edition of Moorlands Sport Extra.
