Cheadle man who sexually assaulted woman whilst she was sleeping jailed

A man who sexually assaulted a woman in Cheadle whilst she was sleeping has been jailed.

Mark Janke, aged 57, from Cheadle, assaulted the victim whilst they were both inside a house in the area back in January 2021.

The victim woke up when it happened. The incident was later reported to police, prompting officers to later question Janke.

He denied what happened and was taken to court after officers gathered evidence and spoke with the survivor.

Following a trial at Stafford Crown Court in January, a jury found Janke guilty on two counts of sexual assault of a female.

On Tuesday (4th June), he was sentenced to five-years in prison, placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and given an indefinite restraining order against the survivor.

Dectective Sergeant Daniel Martin, from the Rape and Serious Sexual Assault (RASSO) officers, worked on the case. He said: “We’ve worked hard to support the survivor throughout this investigation and I’m pleased that the outcome has given her some form of closure.

“I’d like to recognise her for the bravery she showed in coming forward and telling us what happened.

“I hope this sends a clear message to any survivors of sexual offences that you will be listened to by officers who are passionate about delivering justice. No matter how recent the offences may have been, we will seek the toughest punishment possible for those guilty of sexual crimes.”
