Congleton Town have capped off a stellar first season in the Northern Premier League with having two players named in the Northern Premier League West team of the season.
Midfield maestro Peter Williams has been voted into the starting 11 of the team by the league’s managers. While goal machine Max McCarthy was named among the substitutes.
Williams featured in 52 matches across all competitions for the Bears this season, as they reached the playoff final away at Hednesford Town. His all-action midfield performances where he covered every single blade of grass haven’t gone unnoticed. He has also scored 13 goals in the process including the winner against Hednesford Town at the Cleric Stadium and a last gasp penalty against Hanley Town at the end of November.
He also chalked up his 200th appearance in Congleton colours away at Stafford Rangers away in April.
McCarthy finished 2nd only to Radcliffe bound Rio Clegg of Trafford in the chase for the golden boot as he netted 19 league goals. He showed a fabulous array of finishes. An over the shoulder volley against Nantwich in January and a free kick that David Beckham would have been proud of away at Clitheroe are two that spring to mind.
Also included in the team is former Leek Town defender Olly Harrison who guided Hednesford Town to promotion via the playoffs as well as Kai Evans and James Melhado of Nantwich Town.
More awards will be announced on Saturday at the Northern Premier League awards night including who will succeed former Leek Town man Rob Stevenson as the NPL Supporters player of the year. While the Premier division team of the season will be announced later this week.
