We are so lucky to have two amazing RSPB Reserves in the Moorlands, where wildlife can flourish in a natural habitat and that’s why my 48th Reason to Visit the Moorlands is the RSPB Reserve at Coombes Valley.
Coombes Valley is an incredible woodland reserve, a great place for families to visit to explore and see the many examples of nature that abound there.
It’s home to many birds such as flycatchers and redstarts who come to breed in the spring and early summer and also finches, redwings and fieldfares who visit in winter.
I have visited many times over the years, including the early start needed to hear the spring dawn chorus. National Dawn Chorus Day is held on the first Sunday in May which this year is May 5.
Before the pandemic, RSPB Coombes Valley received a Hidden Gem Award as one of the winners of VisitEngland’s 2018 Attractions Accolades recognising the quality of visitor experiences across England.
Coombes Valley is breathtakingly beautiful and well worth a visit to learn about the great work the RSPB is doing to encourage a really wide variety of rare birds to make their homes here. How they encourage different types of woodland habitat to attract different species is fascinating and having a really successful impact.
There are walking trails for all abilities, from beginners to more experienced hikers, and along all trails you find viewpoints and specially commissioned art works. It’s a particular treat for younger visitors who can enjoy all sorts of activities.
