Kidsgrove Athletic move within touching distance of the playoff with victory at Widnes

Kidsgrove Athletic are just one point and one place off the playoff places in the Northern Premier League West division as they won 2-1 at Widnes.

The side managed by Scott Dundas took the lead on nine minutes when Will Saxon swept home for his 2nd Kidsgrove goal since he returned to the club from Leek Town before Kingsley Adu-Gyamfi turned home a cross from Aaron Bott to make it 2-0 on the hour mark.

However, the game’s main talking point came with just 25 minutes to go when Lewis Bergin and Scott Sephton clashed which ensured a 21-man melee that resulted in the two perpetrators being sent off. The gap in the Kidsgrove defence allowed Jay Roberts to fire in a Matty Rain’s cross to give the hosts late hope. However, despite the goal, Kidsgrove were able to hold on for all three points and, move within touching distance of the playoffs.

Macclesfield, recovered from their defeat at Runcorn Linnets in midweek to see off Prescot Cables, thanks to a Dan Cowan winner with just seven minutes to go, as the defender got the last touch on a deep cross to win the game for the Silkmen.

However, once again they did not have it all their own way as Prescot, who had Josh Hammill sent off after just 30 minutes of play for two quick yellow cards, took the lead on 51 minutes when James Edgar’s long-range free kick found its way through a crowd of bodies to beat debutant goalkeeper Joe Mason.

Prescot’s lead did not last long as James Berry equalised for the Silkmen just 60 seconds later as the club’s record signing chipped Mitchell Allen in the Tiger’s goal. Before Cowan won the game for Macclesfield on 83 minutes.

Leek Town are hot on the tails of Macclesfield as they put in an efficient performance against Colne at the F. Ball Community Stadium.

The Moorlands men ran out 1-0 winners as Colne goalkeeper Andre Mendes carried Rob Stevenson’s 26th minute strike over the line for the game’s only goal, it was also a landmark moment for Stevenson as it was his 75th goal for the club.

In the second half, the visitors piled on the pressure looking for an equaliser but the Leek defence did well to keep Colne out as they claimed their 10th league win of the season.

Newcastle Town took a share of the points away at Trafford as they played out a 2-2 draw.

Ryan Morton had opened the scoring for Trafford on 16 minutes before recent signing Kyle Stubbs equalised just three minutes later for Newcastle. Castle then took the lead just after the break through Oliver Richie, only for Morton to score his second goal of the afternoon for Trafford with 20 minutes left on the clock.

It was a day to forget for Hanley Town as they were beaten 5-1 away at Witton Albion. Four goals for Connor Hughes and one from Elliot Rokka put the Albion in a commanding position. Hanley didn’t even score their goal, as Witton defender Mike Koral scored an own goal late on in the tie.

In the Premier Division, Nantwich Town saw their game at home to Marske United called off due to a waterlogged pitch and, Whitby Town winning 1-0 against Atherton Collieries it moves the Dabbers back into the bottom four.

Cheshire neighbours Congleton Town made the long journey north to face Kendal Town in the North West Counties Premier Division and, came away with nothing as they lost 2-1 to the Mint cakes.

Tom Kilifin had given Kendal the perfect start on three minutes when he was on the end of a scramble from a deep free kick before Steven Yawson scored a fine goal to make it 2-0.

Congleton pulled one back with two minutes to go through Darren Chadwick and, the Bears had an enormous penalty appeal turned down after Mackenzie Faulkner was brought down in the area but, all he got was a spell in the sin bin.

In the North West Counties South division, two goals from Thomas Wakefield were not enough for Foley Meir as they were held to a 2-2 draw at Barnton. The result keeps them in 19th place in the league table and 10 points off Alsager Town who lost 3-1 to Brocton, Sam Madeley scored Alsager’s goal.

Stone Old Alleynians won their Midlands Football League clash with Romulus by the odd goal in five as they ran out 3-2 winners, Ryan Baxter, Josh Smedley and Jack Bowater with the goals for the side managed by Luke Askey.
