Leek Town lifted the Pitching In Northern Premier League West Division Torphy after a hard fought 1 -1 draw with promotion chasing Bootle FC.
939 fans attended the game with nearly all of them staying behind to watch the trophy presentation.
The game that preceded the presentation was a hard fought affair and was not helped by some indifferent refereeing.
Bootle are fighting to finish in 2nd or 3rd spot in the league which will guarantee them a home tie in the playoffs.
Aaron Opoku opened the scoring for the home side in the 59th minute, heading in from a set piece cross from the right. He had been deployed as a make shift defender because Leek are missing some key players through injury including Olly Harrison and Julius Ndene.
Ndene sustained a nasty head injury last week in the game away at Avro. A number of people who were listening to the commentary last week had enquired how Julius was so we caught up with him before today’s game. Listen below:
Bootle equalised through a penalty in the 68th minute. Jake Burton sent Dino Visser the wrong way. Both sides had chanced to take all 3 points but the game was to finish honours even.
It was after the final whistle the party could really get started as the Leek Town players and management staff made their way to the Directors box for the trophy presentation. Moorlands Radio’s Dave Stringer and Ian Corbishley described the proceedings and also spoke to some of the players during the celebration. Listen below:
When the excitement had died down a tad, Leek’s and the league’s leading scorer Rob Stevenson made his way to the Moorlands Radio commentary box and chatted to Sports Editor Tony Walley. Listen below:
