Local hospitals declare ‘Critical Incident’

The university hospital of north midlands has declared a Critical Incident and has announced measures to protect patient safety.

Dr Matthew Lewis, UHNM Medical Director, said that they were currently experiencing extremely high demand for all services.

Both Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital in Stafford have been under severe and sustained pressure over the Christmas period. They announced that the situation is likely to continue into the New Year bank holiday period.

Emergency departments have continued to see the sickest patients first, which has led to long waits for some patients. In some cases in excess of 12 hours.

Dr Lewis went on to thank staff for their on-going efforts and the public for their understanding and co-operation.
