Man arrested and van seized over public order offences

A man has been arrested over public order offences after allegedly shouting at a woman and her child in Stoke-on-Trent.

Officers were called at 11.40am on Tuesday (25th April) to Chell Heath Road.

A woman reported that she was walking with her child when a man pulled up in a white Citreon Relay van, with a logo, though the vehicle is unrelated to a business.

The male driver spoke to the woman, asking her for the time, before saying that the child was his. There was no physical contact between the individual in the van and the mother and child.

The mother and child left the scene on foot to a place of safety. They were left shaken but unhurt in the incident.

A 31-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent has since been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence. He remains in police custody while inquiries continue.

A van has also been seized. Stoke-on-Trent north local policing team commander, Scott McGrath, said: “I can understand that this incident has caused significant concern in the local area.

“I would like to reassure the public that we do not believe there is any wider risk to them or their children at this time.

“We continue to patrol the local area to reassure residents.”
