A famous day in Leek Town’s history as they beat South Shields in front of the BBC cameras

Leek Town are through to the 4th and final qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup with a sensational 2-0 victory over National League North high flyers South Shields in front of the BBC digital cameras.

Josh Brehaut’s men sit 59 places below the Mariners in the non-league system however, they made light work of their visitors from the North East.

The opening goal of the game came on 11 minutes when midfielder Tom Scully played an unbelievable ball over the South Shields defence for his captain, Marc Grocott, who put the ball beyond former Nantwich Town goalkeeper Myles Boney to break the deadlock.

After the goal, Leek had chances to extend through Aaron Opoku and Julius Ndene but, neither of them were able to get their efforts on target. It left most inside the F.Ball community Stadium wondering if Shields were going to punish them after the interval.

However, just four minutes after the break, Leek doubled their lead when Rob Stevenson picked up the ball midway inside the South Shields half. He set off towards the penalty area before unleashing a Stevenson special as the ball rocketed past Boney leaving him with no chance of saving it.

It’s a momentous day in Leek’s history as they’re just 90 minutes away from the 1st round proper of the competition and to get the victory in front of national television is something else.

The draw for the next round is on Monday at 3 pm on Talksport 2, we will be speaking to Josh Brehaut on Monday evening to get his reaction to the draw.
