Former Leek Town goalkeeper Danny Roberts joins Nantwich Town

Former Leek Town goalkeeper Danny Roberts has joined Northern Premier League West side Nantwich Town.

Roberts joins the Cheshire based side after first-choice goalkeeper Scott Moloney fractured his wrist and will be out for several weeks.

This is Roberts’ second spell with the club as he was on the books of the Dabbers during the 2008/09 season. He appeared twice for Nantwich that season. The first as a second-half substitute against Kendal Town in the Unibond League Cup and then in that season’s Cheshire Senior Cup final.

He had two spells at Leek Town, the first being between 2011 and 2013 before leaving for Belper Town and then Witton Albion.

Roberts then returned to the F.Ball Community Stadium in January 2018 and was a near enough ever present for Leek between the sticks until his departure this year. Across those two spells with Leek, he would make a total of 238 appearances.

The goalkeeper was also named in the Northern Premier League West team of the season as he kept 16 clean sheets in 48 games helping Leek make the playoff final that season.

Nantwich Town manager Paul Carden told the club’s website: “Losing Scott is a blow as he’s been finding his feet, getting better with every game and has had standout moments with the penalty saves.

“It’s another impact injury which is so unfortunate, but we seem to be having that bad luck at the moment.”

“Danny’s been a very good keeper at this level and at the league above as well. Leek wouldn’t have had him for as long as they did if he wasn’t capable so we’re really happy that he’s come onboard, he’ll bring experience to what is a young backline, he’s vocal and will give that steadiness that will help the lads.

“We had keepers offered to us that were young/loanees, but at this stage, I feel we’ve got a really good goalkeeper in Danny.”
