Kidsgrove Athletic re-sign their all time top goal scorer Anthony Malbon

Kidsgrove Athletic have re-signed their all-time top goal scorer Anthony Malbon.

Malbon who has 159 goals in the colours of Kidsgrove Athletic returns to the club’s first team after 19 months away.

The former Leek Town and Newcastle Town man first joined Kidsgrove Athletic back in the 2014/15 season under Pete Ward. He scored seven goals that season, the first of them coming in a 3-2 win away at that season’s champions Mickleover Sports.

He continued to find the back of the net regularly for the club. His last goal was in a 1-0 home win over Warrington Rylands, who went on to win the league that year, in late January 2022. His final appearance for the club came in the 2-0 win over Clitheroe on the 5th March 2022.

Since then, Malbon has had spells at Hanley Town, Eccleshall and even had a short spell as player manager of Stafford Town in the North West Counties Football League last season.

However, Kidsgrove has always been Malbon’s spiritual home and, he started this season playing for the Kidsgrove Athletic reserve side in the Staffordshire County Senior League where he has scored four goals in six games.

After expressing a desire to get back involved with the first team at Kidsgrove Athletic, manager Scott Dundas invited him down to train with the first team and, after just a couple of sessions the goal machine was signed up for the first team.

In a statement released by the club, Dundas said: “Malbs had attended a few training sessions, and he has shown the management team that he has the appetite & attitude to work his way back into the first team.

“His ability on and off the ball had never been in question. He seems in a good place and if we can keep him focused & get him to produce on the pitch, he will be a major asset to our young squad.”

It is expected that Malbon will be involved in the Kidsgrove Athletic squad as they head to Prescot Cables tomorrow in the Northern Premier League West looking for their first league win since late September.
