Over 1000 people attend annual Leek Club Day

Over 1,000 people gathered in the Leek Market Place on Saturday 8th July to celebrate the Annual Leek Club Day, continuing a 200 year old tradition.

Hundreds of residents from across North Staffordshire joined Moorlands Praise, a Christian band, for a segment of modern music as people started to gather across the town. Just before 14:30pm, Churches, Schools and Organisations paraded into the Market Place for an open air worship, led by the Salvation Army who went on to lead a procession across the town.

Despite the rain, Organisers believe the numbers taking part exceeded those experienced last year or even before COVID-19.

Joseph Sullivan, Lead Organiser said “Leek Club Day brings us together as the community of the Staffordshire Moorlands. It once again gave us the opportunity to reaffirm our shared belief in the meaning of Club Day, as our predecessors and ancestors have since as early as 1828. Whilst no one knows when Leek Club Day started (but the earliest newspaper report that we have found is from 1828), in 2023 we continued this proud history to work together to share our joy with the people of Leek, the Staffordshire Moorlands and its visitors.”

Joseph continued ‘we were overwhelmed with the support of the people of Leek, the Staffordshire Moorlands and beyond, but despite the rain the sun came out which allowed for one of the most successful events yet. Planning for 2024 has already begun’
